The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is Critically Endangered and the sole representative of its genus. With an estimated 350-450 mature adults left, the monk seal is the third-rarest of the world’s marine mammal species. These seals have been sighted increasingly within No Fishing Zones in Gökova Bay since 2014.
