Quick Guide 25: Ottoman Sultans and Their Mosques
In the Ottoman Period, many Ottoman Sultans, to make their names memorable built mosques in their own names. The names of Imperial Mosques later have been given to the neighbourhoods. The Suleymaniye, Fatih, Sultanahmet or Yavuz Sultan Selim neighbourhoods are examples of this.
Another very common system with the Ottoman mosques was that they were always built as parts of larger complexes. In other words the mosques would not be the only building in the complex. Other buildings in the complex are medreses, tombs, kitchens for the poor, libraries, hospitals or rental shops. The rental income from the shops would sustain the whole complex.
