The menacing prospect of child abduction and murder, was the looming thought that hung over late 70's early 80's Atlanta like a fog as the cities children were vanishing from the streets, most of em young African-American boys. It shook a city that had only recently come to terms with the assassination of Martin Luther King. Gripped by fear, anxiety and helplessness, so much was the threat that the police called an 11 o'clock curfew to any black kid under 15.
Amist the hysteria In 1982, Wayne Williams was convicted of killing two adults. FBI suspected that he was also responsible for most of the child murders but was he responsible for them all? Even the killings of four young adults?
It's clear that Williams was guilty of some of the murders but many believe not all of them. Where local police believe that it was the KKK. Many people to this day believe his conviction was based on political pressure and that the KKK had been on the FBI's radar for some time after an informer had told them that the local Klan had been killing black children in the area to hopefully push the racially divided town to its limit.
I believe Williams definitely killed the kids although im unsure he killed them and have my doubts about the adults. Strange how he murdered the girls , why if he was gay?
Authorities will take another look at the decades-old Atlanta child murders, re-examining evidence in the hopes that technological breakthroughs might point to a definite killer in the cases, most of which were never solved.
The point is not to vindicate convicted murderer Wayne Williams because he certainly must have been guilty of some of the murders, but the purpose is to find out if others were involved and may still be free.
