NGOs have been at the receiving end of scathing attacks by some government and political leaders in recent times.
In the aftermath of the fire in Johannesburg that killed 77 people, the litigation related to the Aarto traffic legislation, and the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit -- NGOs credentials and role in SA's democracy have been questioned.
Amongst claims are that these civil society organisations seek to take over policy-making and implementation from the executive without a lack or any recognisable mandate and are hell-bent on distracting government from its work.
However, some analysts have come out in defence of NGOs, recognising their good work over the years.
They have urged government not to use them as scapegoats for its failings.
