A new structure built to confine the reactor at the centre of one of the world's worst nuclear disasters was unveiled to the world for the first time on July 2 in Pripyat, Ukraine at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
Simon Evans, associate director and head of the Chernobyl Shelter Fund Nuclear Safety Department at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and Balthasar Lindauer, nuclear safety department director at EBRD, discussed the lengthy multi-billion dollar project to construct the protective structure.
Reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded and burned down on April 26, 1986, rendering the surrounding area dangerous to inhabit due to the presence of radioactive material.
