About half a million tonnes of bushmeat are reportedly hunted in Nigeria every year, despite the fact that the hunting and selling of most endangered species is illegal under national law. Today, the scale of bushmeat hunting is far greater than its ever been but it’s arguably not too late to turn things around for the protection of endangered wildlife.
According to a 2020 WildAid survey on urban bushmeat consumption in Nigeria, more than half of all respondents believe that there is less bushmeat available today than there was five years ago and 98% indicated that there are acceptable alternatives to eating endangered species, such as organic chicken and fish.
One brand proposing an alternative is the Noiler Chicken. A dual-purpose hybrid chicken, brood and reared to address food insecurity and the hunting and consumption of bushmeat. This week on #GoWild, ARISE Environmental Correspondent Laila Johnson-Salami, explores how the Noiler could be a bushmeat alternative across Nigeria.
