At least 37 people have been sickened in a hepatitis A outbreak linked to Townsend Farms frozen berries sold at Costco stores. Eleven people have been hospitalized.
So far, the outbreak is spread across six western states: California, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and Hawaii.
The berry mix, called Townsend Farms Anti-Oxidant Blend, comes from all over the world, specifically from Argentina, Chile and Turkey. Health investigators suspect the virus may have come from the pomegranate seeds found in the mix.
Costco has notified customers who purchased the product, and has pulled all remaining bags from store shelves.
Symptoms of Hepatitis A infection include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, abdominal cramps, dark urine and jaundice. If you think you may have contracted a hepatitis A infection, contact your healthcare provider.
If you ate the berries within the past two weeks, you may still prevent illness by receiving a hepatitis A vaccination. Consult your healthcare provider or local health department about getting the shot. People who have already had the vaccine do not need another one.
