Rosemary Brown married Damien Scallon on 5 October 1978. The grooms brother, Fr. Kevin Scallon, officiated at the midday ceremony in St Eugene's Cathedral in Derry, where DANA's parents were wed. The couple were hoping for a quiet occasion, which is why they chose a Thursday for their big day. But word got round and local factories and schools were closed early so people could attend. DANA got dressed late so as not to crease her dress, but the zip broke and to avoid delay she had to be sewn into it. For the rest of the day she was too scared to take a deep breath in case it caused a wardrobe malfunction!
After the service it took the newly weds all afternoon to drive through the crowds on their way to the reception, held in the Grand Ballroom of the Everglades Hotel, recently built in 1976 on the other side of the River Foyle. There the catering staff somehow managed to produce a hot meal for the wedding party, even though the four hundred guests arrived nearly four hours late for their two o'clock booking. The couple left for Dublin later that evening and then flew to London. They then caught a flight to the Caribbean on the way to the island of Grenada where they spent their honeymoon.
