Corfu, The Island of the Phaeacians, Based on the myth Poseidon, God of the sea, fell in love with Korkyra, a beautiful nymph. Poseidon abducted Korkyra and brought her to an unnamed island. In a state of marital bliss he named the island after her. Korkyra is Corfu´s Greek name. Soon after, a child whom they named Phaiax was born to them.
