Egypt's political crisis has intensified after the failure of international mediation efforts and a warning from the interim government that its patience with the Islamist protest camps has run out.
Although supporters of ousted president Mursi refuse to move until he is reinstated, acting President Adli Mansour said he would press on with plans to hold new elections in nine months.
In a televised address he said, "We have made a decision to move forwards and catch up, and whoever fails to realise this will bear the consequences of their own decision."
With the failure of envoys from the United States, the European Union, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to break the stalemate, there are now fears of further violent confrontations.
Nearly 300 people have already been killed since Mursi was toppled.
