STORYLINE:
Thousands of mourners gathered on Wednesday to mourn six Palestinians killed during a raid into a flashpoint refugee camp in the northern city of Tulkarem in the occupied West Bank according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Intense firefights between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in the camp began late Tuesday and raged for six hours until early Wednesday.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the raid.
Residents said that an Israeli drone fired into the crowded camp, killing at least five of the Palestinians.
Militants in Tulkarem said they hurled explosive devices at Israeli military vehicles and fired at forces storming the camp.
Local journalists shared footage of the main road to the camp ripped up by Israeli military bulldozers and one house in the camp reduced to rubble after they said Israeli forces struck it with a shoulder-fired missile.
The militant offshoot of the secular nationalist Fatah party, the Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, claimed five of those killed were its fighters.
The Israeli military has been escalating raids targeting militants in the West Bank since the start of the war, increasingly backed by airstrikes that haven’t been used in the occupied territory since the second Palestinian uprising, or intifada, in 2000-2005.
