Lung cancer is the largest cancer killer in the United States. It is responsible for nearly three times the number of deaths per year than the second deadliest cancer, colorectal. This is partly because of the difficulty in diagnosing the disease early, as it’s extremely challenging to navigate to small lesions that lie in the outer segments of the lung.
Dr. Michael Pritchett, a pulmonologist based in Pinehurst, North Carolina, explains: “75% of lung cancer patients are found when they’re at stage 3 or 4 when we can’t do a surgery to cure them. We need something that changes the status quo, something that goes out to smaller lesions and safely biopsies them. That’s where robotics come into play.”
Ion by Intuitive is a robotic-assisted bronchoscopy system that can reach every segment of the lung, navigating through tight airway passages to reach small nodules and complete a biopsy. This gives doctors the confidence to get crucial early answers for patients with an abnormal growth on their lung.
Dr. Pritchett adds: “I think a shift is coming for lung cancer, it's long overdue. The Ion system represents a first step. This is the beginning but it's an exciting beginning.”
