Canon SL2 vs Canon SL1 - Canon 200D vs Canon 100D
Hey whats up everyone, my names Chris Winter and in this video I’m going to go over some of the key differences and similarities between the brand new Canon SL2 and the Canon SL1 so hopefully I can help you choose which one will be best for you.
But anyway let's compare these two cameras.
———
Articulating Screen
One of the first differences you’ll notice between these two cameras is on the back here. The Canon SL2 got an upgrade from the SL1 with it’s aritculating screen. This now means that the screen itself can flip up and down and even in on itself.
This is great if you want to take some shots from up high or even down low and still get some good composition. Like I said before you can also flip the screen in on itself which is great because the LCD screen is protected from scratches and bumps. If you’re a youtber or vloggers another great thing about this is that you can actually flip the screen around completely so you can see yourself when you’re filiming your own videos. Pair this up the great autofocus on the SL2 and you’ve got a great setup for vlogging.

Touch screen
Now both cameras come with touch screens.
This is really great espeacially if youre’ getting into the world of photography and you’re used to using your phone. Now of course you’ll still use the physical buttons to change a lot of the settings but I’ve found that having the touch on the back can aspeed up your workflow quite a bit.

The SL1 has a 18 megapixel sensor which I actually found was adequate in most situations. But if you do like to crop or really pixel peep you’ll probably want to go for the Canon SL1.
Thats because it has a 24.2 megapixel sensor. That’s actually a pretty big spec bump.
Now I’m not normally one to really worrry too much about megapixels, but if you are, thats a pretty big jump.

Autofocus
To me though the biggest new upgrade on the SL2 and probably the reason why I think you should buy it over the SL2 is because of the autofocus especially in video mode.
The SL2 got an upgrade to dual pixel autofocus which is actualyl found in much more expensive cameras such as the Canon 80D, 7D Mark ii and 5D Mark 4.With dual pixel autofocus, where ever you point your camera, it’ll smoothly and cinematically come into focus. It really is so easy. And if you pait that up with the touch screen, you can simply touch on the screen on whatever you want to be in focus and it will do all the focus work for you.
If you are considering using your camera for video, I’d highly recommend the SL2.

But if you’re mainly into stills, another thing you might look into is frames per second.
The Canon SL1 can shoot at 2.5 frames per second, which is ok but on the other hand the new SL2 can actually shoot at a pretty impressive 5 frames per second. Now for a lot of people this might be overkill but if you are into shooting sports or wildlife this will be a nice bump for you.

And if you like to share your photos that you’ve taken with your DSLR on places like Instagram and Facebook, the SL2 does come with Wifi and NFC built in. This makes it easy to share your photos from your DSLR to your smart phone wirelessly rather than connecting it to your computer. I’ve actually found it works really quite well so if this is something you’re into, the SL2 will work well for you.
