We need to identify bumblebee species in order to record them so that we know where they are to conserve them. Several species are hard to identify so we need to look closely. Potting the bee, particularly in a queen pot, minimises the amount of time needed to check the features for identification, so minimises the disturbance to the bee.
The Trust complies with the JCCBI code for insect collecting, which has been formulated and revised to minimise any harm to insects and their populations from their study, and which is the standard for UK entomology.
