Smoke is in the air from Oregon wildfires. Whether the smoke arrives in Puget Sound from Oregon or somewhere else, people should be aware when unhealthful pollution is in the air and they should do something about it, says Dr. Joel Kaufman. He is a University of Washington professor of medicine at the School of Medicine and of environmental and occupational health sciences at the School of Public Health. He has led one of the nation’s largest studies of the effects of air pollution.
In these soundbites, Kaufman talks about:
- How variety of populations – the very young, the very old, people with heart disease, people with lung disease – should change their habits when the air quality is bad
- Safety suggestions, like avoiding vigorous activity outside and seeking a place indoors with air filtration, when the air is smoky
- What happens to the body after inhaling very small particles into the lungs
