Powerful tornadoes tore through the Deep South of the US, killing dozens of people across two states, obliterating buildings and leaving an especially devastating mark in a rural town whose mayor declared, “My city is gone”.
Sunday could bring further severe weather across large parts of the south and midwest, according to the Storm Prediction Center which issued a forecast for "supercells" that may result in tornadoes, heavy hail and damaging winds.
It comes as search and rescue teams from local and state agencies were deployed to help victims impacted by Friday's tornadoes. By Saturday night, local agencies confirmed 26 deaths in Mississippi and one in Alabama. Four people earlier reported missing had been found, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.
