VERONA - ITALY | TRAVEL VLOG OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN VERONA
BACK AGAIN, LET’S KEEP ON DISCOVERING VERONA. IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE VIDEO WE SAW THE HEART OF THE CITY, PIAZZA ERBE AND PIAZZA DEI SIGNORI, TO ADMIRE THE MASTERPIECES OF VERONA. THEN WE COULDN’T MISS JULIET'S HOUSE AND ITS FAMOUS BALCONY, AND AFTER A HUGE BLOWOUT IN A VERONESE TAVERN I AM NOW IN THE DISTRICT OF SOTTORIVA TO GO VISIT THE CHURCH OF SANT'ANASTASIA, THE LARGEST CHURCH IN VERONA. ITS CONSTRUCTION BEGAN IN 1290 AND WENT ON FOR OVER 200 YEARS. THE CHURCH OF SANT'ANASTASIA IS RICH IN WORKS OF ART THAT MAKE IT A SPLENDID EXAMPLE OF GOTHIC ART IN ITALY.
FEW STEPS FROM THE CHURCH OF SANT' ANASTASIA IS ANOTHER ICON OF VERONA
PONTE PIETRA WAS THE ONLY PLACE WHERE TO CROSS THE ADIGE RIVER. THE FORMER CITY OF VERONA WAS FOUNDED ON THE HILL OF SAN PIETRO, LATER THE ROMANS CROSSED THE ADIGE RIVER AND BUILT THE NEW CITY OF VERONA ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ADIGE.
AT THE END OF THE STAIRWAY OF SAN PIETRO HILL THERE’S THE CASTLE OF SAN PIETRO, FROM WHERE YOU CAN ADMIRE ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPES OF VERONA!
IN VERONA WE CAN RETRACE ABOUT 2.000 YEARS OF HISTORY, SIMPLY BY LOOKING AT ITS WALLS, FOR THIS REASON IN 2000 VERONA WAS DECLARED A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. THE WALLS OF VERONA EXTEND FOR ABOUT 6 MILES.
THROUGH THE MIGHTY PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE OF CASTELVECCHIO BUILT IN THE 14TH CENTURY I GO VISIT THE CASTELVECCHIO MUSEUM, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MUSEUMS OF VERONA, HOUSED IN THE HALLS OF THE CASTLE. IT HOSTS IMPORTANT COLLECTIONS OF MEDIEVAL, RENAISSANCE AND MODERN ART, PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES, WEAPONS, DRAWINGS AND PRINTS, AND A SPACE DEDICATED TO TEMPORARY EXHIBITS.
FEW STEPS FROM CASTELVECCHIO STANDS THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT ZENO, ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ROMANESQUE CHURCHES IN ITALY. SAINT ZENO IS THE CITY PATRON. HE WAS THE BISHOP OF VERONA WHO CONVERTED THE CITY TO CHRISTIANITY IN THE FOURTH CENTURY.
ANOTHER STOP-OVER YOU MUST NOT MISS IS THE CATHEDRAL OF VERONA, WITH THE CHAPTER LIBRARY, A POPULAR INSTITUTION FROM THE 5TH CENTURY, KNOWN FOR THE ANCIENT AND PRECIOUS MANUSCRIPTS, CONSIDERED THE OLDEST WORKING LIBRARY IN THE WORLD, WHERE POETS LIKE DANTE AND PETRARCA STUDIED.
ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ADIGE RIVER THERE IS A HIDDEN AND VERY BEAUTIFUL PLACE, THE GIUSTI GARDEN, WITH THE PALACE THAT BELONGED TO THE GIUSTI FAMILY. SEVEN ROOMS FURNISHED IN THE EARLY 1900S STYLE CAN BE VISITED. THE GIUSTI GARDEN IS 1500’S STYLED. WITH THE COMING OF THE GRAND TOUR IN EUROPE THE GIUSTI GARDEN BECAME A POPULAR STOP-OVER FOR THE GREAT PERSONALITIES PASSING BY VERONA: SUCH AS MOZART, GOETHE, RUSKIN, THE EMPEROR JOSEPH II, AND ALEXANDER II OF RUSSIA.
THE CYPRESS-LINED AVENUE CLIMBS UP TO A SPOT WHERE YOU CAN ENJOY ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEWS OF VERONA.
A SECRET STAIRCASE CARVED INTO THE ROCK LEADS TO THE UPPER PART OF THE GARDEN, A PEACEFUL SPOT FROM WHERE YOU CAN ENJOY A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE GARDEN AND THE ROOFS OF THE CITY.
BRA SQUARE IS THE LARGEST SQUARE IN VERONA, AND ONE OF THE LARGEST IN EUROPE. THIS IS THE SQUARE WHERE GARIBALDI SWORE "ROME OR DEATH", THE SQUARE THAT GOETHE DESCRIBED AS A PLACE FULL OF PEOPLE STROLLING ON THE LISTON, WHICH IS THAT BIG PAVEMENT TODAY FULL OF BARS, BUILT WITH THE SAME MARBLE USED TO BUILD THE ARENA.
THE ARENA IS THE MOST FAMOUS AND OLDEST MONUMENT IN VERONA. IT IS THE FOURTH LARGEST ROMAN AMPHITHEATRE IN ITALY. IT WAS BUILT MUCH LARGER, THE THIRD GALLERY IS ALMOST COLLAPSED. IN THE ROMAN ERA THE ARENA COULD HOST UP TO 30,000 PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED THE SHOWS THAT WERE HELD ON THE SAND, “ARENA” OR “SABBIA” IN ITALIAN. THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY WAS A VERY IMPORTANT CENTURY FOR THE ARENA OF VERONA BECAUSE THE SHOWS RESTARTED. KNIGHTLY SHOWS, COMEDIANS, DANCERS, BULL HUNTING, SMALL RECITAL THAT LATER BECAME THEATRE PERFORMANCES. IN 1805 NAPOLEON ARRIVED IN VERONA AND ATTEND TO A BULL HUNT IN THE ARENA, AND IN THAT OCCASION HE DECIDED TO ALLOCATE FUNDS FOR ITS RENOVATION! IN 1913 TO CELEBRATE THE CENTENARY OF GIUSEPPE VERDI'S BIRTHDAY THE AIDA WENT ON STAGE AT THE ARENA: A BIG EVENT ATTENDED BY MANY PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, THE SHOW THAT APPOINTED THE ARENA OF VERONA AS THE WORLD'S LARGEST OPEN-AIR LYRIC THEATRE!
