As the first Spanish city to found a university, Salamanca is filled with students especially in the historic district. The past is visible in the Old Cathedral, the huge Plaza Mayor and the Monterrey Palace, all splendid buildings that rightfully earned the city a place on the Unesco World Heritage Site list in 1988. Salamanca is the golden city.

The city's historic centre has important Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. The Plaza Mayor, with its galleries and arcades, is particularly impressive.

The Old City of Salamanca has retained key attributes of authenticity in terms of form, design, materials, and substance. Location and setting characteristics have also been maintained, as well as the use and function within the modern city.

Salamanca is located in the west of Spain, in the community of Castilla y León, 214 kilometers from Madrid.

- HOW TO GET THERE. If you are coming from abroad, the easiest way is to take a plane to Madrid (Barajas Airport), and then take a bus (Avanza Bus) or the train (RENFE), both of which depart frequently. From Madrid to Salamanca the journey takes approximately two hours. If you come from Portugal or France you can do it by bus or train.

Car. By car the A-62 and A-66 motorways will take you to the city. To get there from Madrid it is necessary to follow the A-50 motorway.
Bus. If you opt for the bus, there is a bus line of the Avanza Bus company that goes direct from Madrid-Barajas Airport to Salamanca. The stop in Barajas is located in Terminal 1 of the airport, in the parking lot located in front of the arrivals hall.
