The first sod was turned today, marking the official start of construction for the new Parks Library and Community Centre to be built on a 2,000m² site on the corner of Trafford Street and Parks Street, Angle Park.

The new library will be bright, inviting and open. Outside spaces will be brought inside, with a central courtyard in the middle of the building that will be integrated into the other elements of the centre and will provide an area for people to meet, read, use free wifi or just relax.

As well as books, computers, modern technology and innovative programming that reflects the needs of the local Parks community, there will be a large hall, meeting rooms, public gardens, toy library, marketplace and a shared kitchen for public use.

Mayor Gary Johanson said, “After a period of consultation, exciting plans have been developed that not only meet community expectations but which go much further to ensure that this new library serves the needs of our changing local community long into the future.”

“For a long time this site has been an important place for the local community and the new Parks Library will be a vibrant, colourful and welcoming place for everybody when it opens in late 2018.”

We would like thank the State Government for gifting us, and the community of Port Adelaide Enfield, the land for $1.

A modern library is about more than just books and borrowing. This will be a space for the whole community to come, engage and interact. We can’t wait to see it take shape over the coming months and I look forward to seeing the new Parks Library officially open in 2018.
