Channel Therapeutics
A seminar series with a special interest in ion channels from both biological and therapeutic perspectives.
Title: Ion channels in black and white or how does our skin get its color
Dr. Elena Oancea
Associate Professor of Medical Science
Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology and Biotechnology
Brown University
Melanocytes are specialized cells that determine the color of our skin and are critical in protecting us from UV radiation. These cells produce the pigment melanin from specialized organelles called melanosomes. Dr. Elena Oancea recounts the ongoing discovery of ion channels and transporters that govern the pH of the melanosome and thus the amount of melanin that it produces. Mutations in these molecules can lead to albinism and greatly increased risk of skin cancer.
