The U.N. special envoy to Libya has met with Egypt's foreign minister in Cairo.
STORY-LINE:
The U.N. special envoy to Libya met on Sunday with Egypt's foreign minister, a day ahead of a much-anticipated session in Libya's parliament.
U.N. envoy Jan Kubis and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met and held talks in Cairo, Egypt.
The meeting came a day before an expected session in parliament to confirm the cabinet of newly appointed prime minister Abdul Hamid Mohammed Dbeibah.
Appointing the cabinet is part of a U.N.-backed transitional roadmap, which envisages holding general elections in the war-torn North African country by the end of the year.
Oil-rich Libya descended into chaos after the ouster of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. It has since also become a haven for Islamic militants and armed groups that survive on looting and human trafficking.
In recent years, the county has split into two administrations: One in the east and another in the west, each supported by an array of militias and foreign governments.
Egypt views the instability in neighboring Libya as a national security threat.
Last month, Egypt's president Abdel Fattah el-Sissi gave his support to a transitional government that would lead neighboring Libya through elections late this year.
