Last weekend I purchased my first air compressor and had to learn a lot about different aspects of air compressors to know what features and specs I needed. In the effort of saving you some time, I’ve compiled what I learned!
Top Things to Consider
1. CFM rating at 40 & 90 PSI
2. Max Pressure
3. Tank Size
4. Compressor Type
CFM Rating
Your CFM rating at 40 & 90 PSI is the amount of air in cubic feet per minute that the compressor can supply at those pressures. This number is critical depending on what tools you plan to use. Plan to have a CFM rating higher than your highest use tool, otherwise you’ll be working with intermittent use.
Max Pressure
As suggested, this is the maximum pressure the compressor will supply. Go through all your tools and applications and determine the maximum pressure required. For me, my road bike tires require up to 110 PSI so I purchased a compressor with 125 PSI capacity.
Tank Size
Tank sizes will range from 1 gallon (in the US) to usually 80 gallons. 1 gallon is usually found on the small pancake compressors while 60-80 gallons are on the stationary compressors. The larger your tank capacity, the longer you can work without turning on the compressor. My tank is 22 gallons which is a good middle size.
Compressor Type
There are two main types of compressors, oiled and oil-less or maintenance free as they are sometimes called. The primary benefits to an oiled compressor are the following:
1. Higher CFM ratings (usually)
2. Quieter operation
3. Higher duty cycle
Oiled compressors are usually more expensive though so if it’s not in budget, it’s possible to find a maintenance free compressor to fit most needs. Mine in oil-less and can supply 6.9CFM @ 40PSI.
The other consideration with compressor type is the power requirement, specifically 240V vs 120V. Make sure your shop is wired for the voltage required.
Lastly, most compressors can be found in online marketplaces. Compressors are fairly simple and robust pieces of machinery, especially the oiled, and you can usually find a great deal on a compressor that will fit your needs. Of course, always do your due diligence before purchasing.
Hopefully this helped you learn some more about air compressors that you may not have known before. If you have any further questions, go ahead and leave them in the comment section down below!
Thanks as always and be safe,
Josh
