In February 2019, our Air Wing and the SWT/KWS veterinary initiative were in action once again treating another injured elephant – this time a tusker that had been arrowed not once but twice. Watch the field operation unfold…
Arrow wounds can cause considerable pain and, if infected, can even cause sepsis. Thanks to the presence of our rapid response helicopter, KWS vet Dr Kariuki (who heads up the SWT/KWS Amboseli Mobile Vet Unit) was able to safely dart the elephant from the air as the SWT/KWS Mobile South De-Snaring Team waited nearby to assist. After a successful treatment, you’ll be elated to hear that this elephant should make a full recovery from his injuries.
Able to hover low and land anywhere, our rapid response helicopter has fast become vital to assisting in elephant rescues and veterinary interventions. In fact, aside from this operation, its assisted in a further three elephant treatments over the past two weeks, as well as herding wandering herds of elephants back into protected areas.
Keeping our propellers spinning and rotor blades turning, however, is incredibly costly. If you can, please consider making a donation to support our Air Wing today – however big or small, it can help us save more wild lives: www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/donate
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.
