The My Environment is Mine Initiative (memyAfrica) commemorated the 2024 World Environment Day with a one-day, one-hour webinar focused on the theme: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience and the topic "Building a Resilient Future: Strategies for Land Restoration, Combating Desertification, and Enhancing Drought Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa" by Engr. Hussein Orekoya, MNSE, a Master of Development Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, United States.
During his presentation, he started by explaining about climate change, drought, and climate resilience and then continue to share about the strategies that have been supporting Sub-Saharan Africa's resilience to drought, desertification, and land restoration.
Some of the strategies includes implementing evidence-based practices such as sustainable land management, reforestation, and agroforestry to restore degraded lands.
- Combating desertification requires policies that prevent overgrazing, deforestation, and unsustainable farming.
- Enhancing drought resilience involves improving water management, adopting drought-resistant crops, and developing early warning systems.
These strategies are crucial for safeguarding food security, livelihoods, and ecosystems, ensuring that communities can thrive despite the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation.
