Running form drills are exaggerated movements that mimic some aspects of the gait cycle. But other drills are simply for building athleticism and helping to keep athletes supple.
Cues are other ways of reinforcing proper form as you run. They help build good habits by reminding you of certain mental models of form (like, "run tall").
