This is an extended excerpt of my interview with multi-instrumentalist Joseph Allred, one of my favorite living guitarists. Hailing from Tennessee, Joseph has been churning out enchantingly diverse albums over the last several years. While his style is easily tethered to the Basho/Fahey lineage, and consciously owes much to them, Allred has a voice all his own. Here we discuss his shift from playing in metal bands to his embrace of the acoustic guitar and the style he's subsequently developed. We give some attention to his strumming technique, while celebrating influences like Iranian tanbur master and jurist, Ostad Elahi.
