Today we're looking at Gideon v. Wainwright, 372 U.S. 335 (1963), the case that brought back the right to an attorney, and if you can't afford one, one will be provided to you at no cost. This is the case that gives us our public defenders as we know them, tries to provide a fair trial to those without means, and a wondrous benchslap for a previous, horrid, decision.
