Duffy’s Tavern was a radio sitcom that aired from 1940 to 1952 on CBS (1941-1942), NBC Blue (1942-1944), and NBC (1944-1951). The title refers to a place situated on 23rd St. in New York, managed by a guy named Archie, played by Ed Gardner. Shirley Booth, Gardner’s wife, also starred with him on this show. Booth had the role of Miss Duffy.
At the beginning of each episode, the song “When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” will be heard, which will be interrupted when Archie gets a phone call. He would answer the call with his popular line “Duffy ain’t here, Archie the Manager speakin’... Then, throughout the show, there are some popular stars that will drop by. Apart from Ava Gardner and Booth, other regulars of the show include Charlie Cantor, Eddie Green, Alan Reed. The star-studded guests were Fred Allen, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope,, Boris Karloff, Shelley Winters, and many more.
