It introduced a fictional German character, Officer Petersen, to contrast with British officers and emphasize German heroism.

Filming faced significant challenges, including bombings and internal conflict, leading to the tragic death of the director, Herbert Selpin, under suspicious circumstances. The film, completed under Werner Klingler, had a limited release in German-occupied Europe but was banned in Germany by Goebbels.
