This teaching describes the Roman custom of celebrating war victories. A triumphal parade was thrown in honor of the victory, featuring war heroes, political leaders, captives in chains, carts of spoils, the conquered king dressed in black, and oxen for the feast to follow. Incense burned throughout the parade route. Alluding to the victory parade, 2 Corinthians describes that Christians are the fragrance of incense, the “aroma of Christ.”

2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.
