National Highway 544, commonly known as NH 544 (previously NH 47), spans a distance of 340 kilometers, linking Salem in Tamil Nadu to Kochi in Kerala, and is often referred to as the Salem-Kochi Highway. This significant roadway traverses through both Kerala and Tamil Nadu, connecting key cities and towns such as Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thrissur, and Kochi.
NH 544 serves as a branch of National Highway 44, contributing to the North-South Corridor of India's National Highway network. Notably, it is the sole fully 4-lane (partially 6-lane) highway in Kerala, boasting features like the Kuthiran Road Tunnel. Originally designated as National Highway 47, NH 544 starts near NH 44 in Salem and proceeds through Coimbatore, Palakkad, Thrissur, culminating at the junction with NH66 in Edapally, Kochi.
To enhance traffic management, the Kerala Road Safety Authority (KSRA) has successfully implemented the initial phase of installing advanced automatic traffic enforcement systems along the 98 km Edappally-Mannuthy stretch of NH 544. Under the Rs 8.5 crore project, 65 automatic traffic enforcement systems will be set up at 23 locations along the route. The monitoring technology integrates virtual sensors, motion detectors, inductive sensors, logo sensors, and high-resolution cameras.
Utilizing 10-megapixel cameras, images of number plates will be captured. A central server, connected to all cameras, will be established at the deputy transport commissioner's office. Magnetic sensors on the roads will activate the cameras upon detecting violations, transmitting the data to the main server. Offenders will be identified through visuals of vehicles and registration plates, subsequently receiving notices. This initiative is a collaboration between KSRA and the Motor Vehicles Department, with technical support from Keltron, aligning with the decision to designate the years 2011-2020 as the 'decade of action for road safety'.
