Getting kids to eat healthy can be a challenge, but there are a few tried and true strategies that can make it less of a battle. This video highlights 11 tactics we’ve used to get our kids to eat healthy and to (with a few exceptions) follow our Paleolithic/animal-based diet.
My wife Kathy and I had to learn a lot of these strategies the hard way. We’ve dealt with our share of power struggles, tantrums and frustration, and over the years we’ve worked hard to refine our approach because we don’t want food to be something that’s stressful for our kids.
So instead of trying to force them to follow good dietary habits with old-fashioned tactics centered around punishment (like sending them to bed without dinner and serving it to them again the next morning), our goal is make healthy eating fun — to help our kids understand how good dietary habits can help them feel better, to have them be part of the food preparation process, and to show them that healthy food is the best testing food of all.
I’ll be the first to admit that not all of these tips are easy to implement. Some of them take time, and patience (and more patience). After all, society is constantly bombarding them with pressure to consume sugary drinks, carb-laden snacks and a never-ending stream of junk food.
But we think the results are worth the effort. We know we’re giving our kids a great foundation for a healthy future.
The tips I talk about in the video include:
1. Start early.
2. Be a role model.
3. Explain the relationship between food and health.
4. Don’t buy stuff you don’t want them to eat.
5. Replace carbs and sugar with healthy fats.
6. Stop offering them snacks between meals.
7. Let them skip meals occasionally.
8. Prepare meals from scratch (with their help).
9. Don’t use unhealthy food as a reward.
10. Allow exceptions every once in a while!
11. Serve up healthier versions of their favorite foods.
