The Giannutri island has had its golden age with the ancient Romans when the banker family Domizi built a splendid villa on the island, where the emperor Nero often retired. Unfortunately only few remnants have been preserved from this lavish villa. At the entrance there has been a mosaic depicting the Minotaur killed by Theseus in the maze. Then a large staircase leads to an atrium where six columns surround an impluvium. The columns have been erected by the amateur archeologist Bice Vaccarano. The villa was connected to the harbor in the nearby bay Cala Maestra where the Romans created a dry dock by sanding down the rock. The strange structure with the shape of a pyramidal trunk probably was built for unloading ships. With the end of antiquity for centuries the island was only a shelter for pirates. In 1882 the Count Gualtieri Adami failed in his intention to operate mining on the island, but he remained inhabitant for 40 years together with his companion Marietta Moreschini. In the last century began the construction of several holiday houses. Since 1996 Giannutri belongs to the national Park "Arcipelago Toscano".
