The Power of Siberia, the first cross-border pipeline to supply Russian gas to China, was put into full service on Wednesday after the Kovykta-Chayanda section of the pipeline started operation.
On the same day, via a video link, Russian President Vladimir Putin took part in the ceremony launching the production at the Kovykta natural gas field, which will feed into the pipeline.
The operation of the Kovykta gas field will significantly increase the total volume of Russian natural gas delivered to China every year. The Power of Siberia pipeline will reduce China's dependence on traditional offshore energy imports and enable China to further explore natural gas as a clean energy to protect environment and reduce carbon emission, especially in the northern part of the country.
The Power of Siberia pipeline started construction in Sep 2014, with a total length of 3,000 kilometers and a pipeline diameter of 1,420 mm.
The pipeline began to deliver gas to China in 2019, with the volume increased year by year, eventually reaching 38 billion cubic meters annually in a 30-year contract period.
