This presentation is by Dr. Antoniana Ursine Krettli, Professor of Parasitology, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Minas Gerais, and
Medical School, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil
Malaria remains a major world health problem. The emergence and spread of Plasmodium falciparum, a deadly parasite now resistant to the majority of antimalarial drugs, is recently aggravated by the decreased sensitivity of the parasite to artemisinin derivatives, and the P.vivax resistance to chloroquine. My research has been focused on the discovery and development of new antimalarial drugs using experimental models, mechanism of action; and characterization of drug susceptibility among P. falciparum and P. vivax parasites in endemic areas in Brazil. This talk discusses the approaches in antimalarial discovery and development in Prof Krettli's multidisciplinary projects involving PhD students and chemistry groups in Brazil.
Antoniana Ursine Krettli is a medical doctor, a full Professor of Parasitology and researcher at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, FIOCRUZ, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Head of the Malaria Laboratory at the time of its foundation until 2003, works in human and experimental malaria and other parasitic diseases, especially Chagas disease, which was the subject of her PhD thesis, partly completed at the New York University Medical School (NYU). She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Pasteur Institute-Paris, at the Lausanne WHO Immunology Center, Switzerland, and at NYU; a visiting scientist at NYU (1996), Pasteur Institute and NIH (National Institute of Health, Bethesda, USA - 1990). She has received “The National Order of Scientific Merit”, an honor bestowed upon Brazilian and foreign individuals to recognize their scientific and technical contributions to the cause and development of science in Brazil. She is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
