Master of Wine, David Allen, tastes a half bottle of Chateau Capbern 2019 - A less well known St-Estephe property where quality is rapidly improving and find a lovely rich ripe structured wine with plenty of ageing potential.
Château Capbern is an estate in the Saint-Estèphe region of Bordeaux, producing well-structured red wines capable of aging 10 to 20 years in good vintages.
The estate was in the ownership of the Gasqueton family for ten generations, and was previously called Capbern Gasqueton. In 2012 it was sold alongside sister chateau - Calon-Ségur - to the French insurance company Suravenir, who dropped the second part of the name from the 2013 vintage.
There are around 32 hectares (79 acres) in production within a 38ha estate. In 2021 the plantings were 52 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 45 percent Merlot, 2 percent Petit Verdot and 1 percent Cabernet Franc. The proportion of Merlot has increased in recent years.
The vineyards are located in two different areas, with a mix of gravel, clay and chalky soils. One plot lies close to Calon Segur near the center of Saint-Estèphe, the other closer to the Gironde River, near Château Meyney.
Fruit is hand harvested; the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in oak for around 18 months. There is around 60 percent new barrels each year since 2013 (the figure was one third until 2012).
