A cabinet meeting chaired by President Museveni on July 8th approved Uganda’s ratification of the new agreement on sharing the River Nile, the Cooperative Framework Agreement, ended almost a decade of political and diplomatic speculation. Approval is the first step, which officials say ends with “depositing instruments of ratification” at the African Union. It is not clear how this new position will shape the geopolitics in a volatile region, or how Egypt, which has threatened to go to war over the Nile.
