Music Theory Thursdays: Episode 2
Welcome to a new series on the channel exploring music theory concepts for guitar! In today's lesson we're going to continue where we left off last week: covering the basic building blocks of all (western) music: Intervals. Here's the lesson plan for this video:
Lesson 1 quick review: 00:01:02
Naming Confusion/Nomenclature Issues: 00:01:38
Upper Structure Intervals: 00:03:29
Visualizing Intervals on the Neck: 00:05:16
Ear Training Drills: 00:08:58
Understanding how two notes relate to each other is fundamental to grasping advanced harmonic concepts! Let's explore them together and work on training our ears to identify all the individual intervals. Luckily there are only a small number to get our heads and fingers around:
unisons, minor second (m2), major second (M2), minor third (m3), major third (M3), perfect fourth (P4), diminished fifth (d5), perfect fifth (P5), minor sixth (m6), major sixth (M6), minor seventh (m7), major seventh (M7), and perfect octaves (P8).
A great way to to practice these is to take one interval at a time. Find different places to play it up and down the guitar neck and get your ears opened up to it so you can identify it when you hear it in different situations (solos, recordings, etc).
Hope this is helpful! Drop any questions into the comments below and I will respond quickly.
