A MILLIONAIRE FINDS A MOTHER AND BABY ABANDONED IN THE FOREST… WHAT HE SAW BROKE HIS HEART...
The autumn wind whistled through the trees as Ethan Rogers made his way along the familiar jogging trail, his feet crunching against fallen leaves. As a successful district attorney specializing in human trafficking cases, these early morning runs were his only escape from the darkness that haunted his courtroom. Today should have been different—celebratory even. He had just won a major case against one of the city's most notorious trafficking rings, yet the victory felt hollow, as all victories had since losing his sister Emily fifteen years ago.
The memory of that day still pierced his heart: Emily, just sixteen, vanishing on her way home from school. The police investigation had gone cold, but Ethan never stopped searching. It was what drove him to become a prosecutor, to fight for those who couldn't fight for themselves. His latest case had felt like a personal victory, bringing down part of the same network he suspected had taken his sister.
As he rounded a bend in the trail, a faint whimper caught his attention. Ethan slowed his pace, years of prosecutorial instinct kicking in. The sound came again, clearer this time—a baby's cry. He moved cautiously toward the source, his hand instinctively reaching for the small canister of pepper spray he always carried.
Behind a thick cluster of bushes, he found them: a woman and an infant, huddled against the base of an old oak tree. The woman's clothes were dirty and torn, her dark hair matted with leaves. She clutched the baby protectively, her eyes wide with fear as they met Ethan's.
"Please," she whispered, her voice hoarse. "Please don't hurt us."
Ethan raised his hands slowly, showing he meant no harm. "I'm a district attorney," he said softly, reaching for his ID with deliberate movements. "My name is Ethan Rogers. Are you in danger? Do you need help?"
The woman's eyes darted frantically around the forest. "They'll find us," she murmured. "They always find us."
The words sent a chill down Ethan's spine. He'd heard similar phrases countless times from trafficking victims in his courtroom. As he knelt down to their level, the baby shifted in the woman's arms, and Ethan's breath caught in his throat. There, on the infant's left forearm, was a distinctive birthmark—a crescent moon shape with a small star beside it.
His hand unconsciously moved to his own arm, where an identical mark lay hidden beneath his running jacket. It was a rare genetic trait, one that ran in his family. His sister Emily had it, and so did their missing brother James.
"What's your name?" Ethan asked, fighting to keep his voice steady.
"Rachel," she replied, pulling the baby closer. "This is Liam." She hesitated, studying Ethan's face. "You... you look like him"...
