In this video we have a longboard surfboard that had the fin box pushed out of place when a piece of plywood hit it during a wind storm. In this case the fin box will need to be removed and replaced in order to repair the board. This board was also set up with a leash loop that went through the box and we'll show how we repaired that too.
This repair applies to any board that has a standard longboard style fin box including stand up paddle boards (SUP).
The basic steps are:
1. Assess the damage, it may go beyond the box area
2. Remove the box
3. Repair the area around the box if necessary (in this case it was not)
4. Install the new box with a resin putty
5. Sand the new box flush and the resin nub from the opening in the deck for the leash loop.
6. Cap the box and leash loop area with at least 2 layers of 6oz fiberglass
7. Blend fiberglass patches into surrounding board.
8. Finish repaired areas with surfboard sealer or polish if a gloss and polish.
9. Install leash loop
10. Install Fin
11. Go surfing
