I played this on my junior degree recital. From my program notes:
True to his teacher, Al O’Connor, James Campbell has written several pieces for multi-percussion, including Sidewinder, Garage Drummer, and Engine Room. Tork carefully toes the line between rhythmic and melodic. Though much of the piece is homogeneous sixteenth-note patterns, those patterns, paired with their orchestrations around the setup, are used to create more complex and melodic accent rhythms. Campbell is also careful to open up in the middle of the piece to further break up the monotonous sixteenth notes, developing the theme introduced at the beginning. When one focuses on those themes, Tork begins to sound less like a multiple-percussion solo and more like an orchestral piece.
