How does one face an unspeakable emotion like grief? How can music express both a deeply personal and profoundly shared experience?
Three years ago, Osvaldo Golijov read David Grossman’s Falling Out of Time and was immediately struck by the emotional depth of the narrative. Part play, part poem, part fable, the book describes a journey “out of time” as parents grieve the death of their child, a quest to comprehend a loss with no name.
Grief and death are not easy topics to confront, but they are universally encountered across generations and cultures. Golijov's new song cycle for the Silkroad Ensemble is a musical, mythical walk that traverses the vast and varied emotional landscapes of grief, giving voice to the unanswerable questions that emerge and moving us to a state where breathing is again possible.
