My mother took me to the Royal Albert Hall in London to see Madama Butterfly as a child. I've loved this opera ever since and "Un bel dì, vedremo" is one of my favourite arias of all time. I used to recreate it on my keyboard (using both piano and sustained strings buttons simultaneously 😎) and kept trying to match the nuances of my Maria Callas recording.
15 years later I consolidated these adventures into a single piano arrangement and filmed it in an Italian opera house. Nothing can quite capture the magic of the original but this is the best I can do.
From the perspective of Madama Butterfly:
0:00 One fine day…
0:34 A ship will make port
0:52 (It will bring a dude called Ben)
1:01 I won’t go down to meet him
1:11 I’ll wait on a hill.
1:36 Someone leaves the city
1:45 It’s the little speck of a man
1:51 They’re climbing the hill
2:03 Who is it? What’ll he say?
2:19 He’ll call “Butterfly” from afar
2:32 I’ll stay hidden to tease him
2:40 But also so as not to…
2:44 Die(!) He’ll be somewhat perturbed
3:07 But will call out for his sweetheart
3:16 (With great resolve) All this will happen!
3:33 I’ll wait. 😎
