The battle happened On October 7, 1780. It lasted just about an hour, but its consequences would last forever. It wasn't until 1931 that Congress established Kings Mountain National Military Park, giving the battlefield - and the men who fought here - the recognition earned so dearly in 1780.
On October 7, 1930, President and Mrs. Herbert Hoover, Gov. John Richards of South Carolina, and Gov. Max Gardner of North Carolina came to Kings Mountain to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the battle that turned the tide in favor of the new nation.
