I'd heard of the Grocott Heritage Centre, and the Old Piggery Cafe that shares space with it, but never been. On discovering that a number of old lorries, including a vintage 1929 Ford Model AA truck, were on display there, I was keen to call in and have a look.
The Grocott name is well-known in Shropshire and beyond for its links to road haulage, and its lorries - including those later branded as Grocontinental - were a common sight. A number of classic lorries and lighter vehicles from this family business' past are preserved at the Grocott Heritage Centre, just down the road from nearby Prees. The 1929 Ford I particularly remember as around 20 or so years ago, it would regularly appear on historic lorry road runs and at shows, on the back of a younger lorry. I hadn't seen it in years and had long assumed it had been sold off elsewhere, so to discover that it lives on in the heritage centre was very good news indeed. Other classic commercial vehicles on display include a wartime-era Bedford, an ERF, a Ford Escort van, a rare bay-window VW pickup, and others. The cafe being alongside the collection was a welcome bonus too, and definitely worth a visit.
The heritage centre is just a few miles down the road from Whitchurch in North Shropshire, just off the road to Wem, a road we often traverse en route to and from Sleap airfield which we often visit on a nice day.
If you're interesting in classic trucks, big or small, please take a look around the channel as there are loads of videos about classic lorries, vans and pickups on here, including the Cheshire Run and the annual gathering of classic lorries down at Gaydon.
