최저임금 결정구조 개편안 확정....'기업 지불능력' 결국 제외
The Korean government unveiled more details about the new minimum wage system.
It's settled on the way the wage will be calculated.
Kim Hyesung explains.
The Labor Ministry announced its final plan on how to change the minimum wage calculation on Wednesday.
The current Minimum Wage Commission will be divided into two bodies, one consisting of policy experts who set a range of changes to the minimum wage, and another that will finalize a figure within the approved scope.
The rate range setting committee will consist of nine policy experts, recommended by representatives from labor, business management and the government.
The rate decision making body will consist of 21 members, recommended by the labor and management, the National Assembly and the government, and will include young people, women, part-time workers and the self-employed.
It'll replace the current Minimum Wage Commission, composed of 27 members, representing labor, management and the public interest,... which has been in place since 1988.
When setting the rate changes, the committee will consider employees' wage levels, the impact on employment, and the GDP growth rate... as part of efforts to better reflect market acceptability.
The Vice Minister of Labor and Management Im Seo-jeong said at the press briefing Wednesday that companies' ability to pay, which was included in a previous draft announced in January was excluded in the final version, citing the difficulty of quantifying it.
If the final proposal passes the National Assembly, the changes to rate hike calculation will be applied for the minimum wage setting process for 2020.
Minimum wage in Korea saw double-digit on-year hikes in 2018 and 2019; now at seven U.S. dollars fifty cents an hour.
