If you need a quick VPN connection, but don't have VPN software (or a VPN server), you can use SSH for a quick and dirty VPN!
In this video we're going to look at two methods for tunneling your traffic through a remote host. SSH can do a SOCKS proxy without any additional software, and you can configure your browser (and possibly other apps) to use that proxy as a way to redirect your traffic. If you want more robust networking, you can use the sshuttle program to actually change your local routing tables so that all your traffic, regardless of application, gets routed through your remote server.
The sshuttle program can be a little finicky, but once the connection is established, it's rock solid and very efficient. For regular usage I recommend an actual VPN software/protocol -- but in a pinch, SSH can get the job done!
