The three-part drama, directed by "House of Cards" and "The Wire" helmer Agnieszka Holland, returns to a pivotal time in modern Czech history that hadn't yet been captured in Czech cinema. The film begins with a reconstruction of the shocking act of a college student setting himself on fire in Prague's Wenceslas Square on January 16, 1969 in protest of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. He died four days later.
We sat down with Holland recently to discuss the importance of the film as well as her connection to the place, time and events portrayed in the series.
