Peter Garrett and Midnight Oil are using their power to push their latest passion - street kids. A few weeks ago, the Oils toured the country, singing to raise money for these children. But Peter Garrett isn't the kind of crusader who throws a few concerts, then forgets his cause. Jennifer Byrne spent time with Garrett on the streets to find out just how he wants the money spent; meeting the youngsters he wants to help. It's estimated more than 50,000 children across Australia are living on the streets - and as Garrett tells Byrne, 'With the recession, it's turned from a problem into an epidemic.' Garrett says the answer to the problem is not simply throwing money at it; it's not short term refuges. What's needed is a network of homes where the homeless can live for as long as it takes to get back on their feet, find a job and re-enter society. Garrett says the alternative is a recipe for disaster - 'If you scrap heap people, they'll turn your society into a scrap heap.'
