On September 23, 1962, in the presence of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and Maestro Leonard Bernstein, Philharmonic Hall at the new Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York was ceremoniously inaugurated. John D. Rockefeller III, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Ambassador Adlai Stevenson, UN Secretary General U Thant, Senator Jacob Javits and Secretary of State Dean Rusk and wife Virginia Foisie Rusk were in attendance.
